Birthday New Year Party

People who are born on 31st December or on 1st January have the advantage of celebrating the New Year's Eve and their birthday together, thereby saving some bucks. Lucky ones, hehe. Jokes apart, I would suggest anyone whose birthday falls on the last week of December would better postpone the celebrations for few days and club the New year party and birthday party to have a blast on the New Year Eve celebration. Here are some birthday party ideas to be celebrated on the last day of the calender:-

Decorations
If you are going to have the party at home, then decorate the home with streamers, balloons with the noisemakers and hats. Fill the balloons with some noisemakers and tie them in such a way that even kids' can reach them to make the noises at the stroke of midnight. Make New Year noisemakers at home by filling the plastic film canisters halfway with corn kernels and decorate with shiny stickers. Make a hole at the canister's cap and put a thread and hung them. For more decoration tips click here.

Birthday food recipes
On birthday, birthday cake is inevitable. In the other menus, there can be Italian meatballs, apple pie, baked ham, Deviled Egg boats along with cookies and chocolates. If there are children present in the party, then do the toasting with something non- alcoholic drinks like hot spiced cider or any colorful cocktails suitable for kids.

Birthday party activities
Since it is the New Year's Eve, arrange for some activities that will go with the mood of the celebration. One of the common activity of New Year party is to writing of letter telling one's aims and wishes for the coming year and then keeping them in a safe place without lettting anyone to read it. On the next New Year's Eve, the letters will be opened and it will continue as a cycle. Or there can be batting of balloons but there is a catch. Guests have to be in pairs with their one hand locked with each other and they have to volley the balloon with one hand. The pair that does it longer will be the winner. Or other funny games can be done like memory gift exchange or writing of resolutions on sheets of paper separately and then mixing them randomly someone reads it aloud asking the guests who made what resolution.

So, start the countdown for the New year 2008 and enjoy double celebration on this New Year eve

People born within 22nd December - 20th January fall under the zodiac sign of Capricorn. The common Capricorn traits are that they are traditional, practical, respects authority, neat and tidy and has a likeness for elite things. So if you know someone whose zodiac sign is Capricorn and you don't know that person too well, then go for the conventional birthday gifts like photo frame, bracelets, watches, diaries, wallets, apparels or monogrammed briefcase or leather bags. They will love anything that is of utility so think of something that will be useful for them in future.

It is said that a Capricorn is sensitive to cold is so something warm like scarves, gloves, waistcoat will make them happy. Also, being a practical person, a Capricorn might not make extravagant buy, but it does not mean they won't be happy if they get a expensive gift like diamond pendant or a silk bathrobe.

Being a earth sign and the ruling planet being Saturn, the main gemstone for this zodiac sign is Garnet. So, one option can be any kind of jewelery consisting of this stone.

Gifts for birthday on Christmas

Are you going to celebrate anyone's birthday on Christmas? If yes, then it is good for you as you can give the birthday cum Christmas presents at one time. Hehe. Jokes apart, when it comes to birthday gifts on this holiday season, it is better to give something that goes with the mood of the season.
When it comes to selecting a gift for him, my experience tells me that men usually prefers gifts that can be of utility rather than showpieces. So give them "A Christmas Story" Lamp
or a video and MP3 Jukebox or a Digital photoframe . Or you can pamper your boyfriend or husband with the Men's Bracelet watch or leather wallets.
When it comes to women, then most men try to go for the traditional gifts like jeweleries and perfumes. But you can be a little different and present her a beautiful candle holder with some beautiful candles or a digital camera.
If there is a birthday party of a kid, then Animal Skittles and carry case or electronic drum sticks. Or else, you can present a a story book like the classic "A Christmas Carol".

Whatever gift you might buy, the celebrant's taste and hobbies should be kept in mind while finding the gift. That's the golden rule for buying any gift for birthday or any other occasions.

16th birthdayTurning sixteen is the first biggest milestone in one's life. Sixteen is the sweetest age and is the first step toward adulthood. Birthday Cake Themes

Ever wondered what makes birthday cakes so special and extraordinary? It is the perfect theme that makes a birthday cake look gorgeous and unforgettable. Themes for birthday cakes can vary according to the age of the birthday girl or boy. For example, birthday cake themes for young girls can be Cinderella Castle Cake, Princess Castle Cake, Ice Cream Castle Cake, Madeline's Hat Cake, Pink Pony Cake, or a Sunflower Cake.

Young boys who love sports can have their birthday cake themes on sports, like Bowling Ball Cake, Bowling Lane Cake, Skateboard Cake, Football Cake, Pirate and Pirate Ship Cake, Lego Cake or a Treasure Chest Cake. Girls and boys and adults loving animals can have Horse Cake, Sheep Cake, Pony Cake, or a Cow Cake as their birthday cake theme.

Adults' birthday cake themes can range from fun cake ideas like Campfire Cakes, Hot Dogs & Fries Cake, Catch the Rainbow Cake, Pool Party Cake, to beach ideas like Hawaiian Beach Cake, Fish Cake, Mermaid Cake, Pail of Sand Cake and Under the Sea Cake.

Select the appropriate birthday cake theme according to the age and preference of the person who's having a birthday. An adult will not like a cartoon character like Spiderman, Snowhite and Batman as the theme for his birthday cake. The theme for an adult birthday cake should synchronize with the celebrant's age, personality, and interests. The same goes with teens and kids. They will not like if you choose a serious theme for their birthday cake. A light and funny theme would be perfect for a kid's or teen's birthday cake.

Celebrate Birthday With the Festival of Lights!

I have an Indian friend Mansi, who lives here in San Jose, quite close to my place. Over the years she has become a very good friend of mine. We keep chatting for long hours whenever we meet and visit each other's homes. In this way, I have come to know a lot of facts about Indian culture and their biggest festivals. Diwali or The Festival of Lights is one of them. This is one of my favorite festivals too. I have heard from Mansi how the Indian homes are adorned with colorful lights and lights with oil and earthenware, which they call diyas (spelled as DI-YAA). They even celebrate this particular day with offerings to the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, with fireworks and crackers.

Now, wouldn't it be exciting to have someone's birthday on Diwali? For those who have November 9 birthdays, it can be quite a fun! You can decorate your house with colorful lights and arrange for a sparkling fireworks display for the guests invited to your birthday party. Diwali birthday can be a pleasant and the brightest day for you, especially if you are depressed that Halloween is over for this year:) So, get geared for double delight and party time on the joyous occasion of Diwali or the Festival of Lights, and wish the birthday boy or girl who is lucky to have a Diwali birthday!

Birthday Wishes for Same Day Birthday

My friend Suzanne and I share the same day birthday. It's coincidental, but somehow I feel that she is one of my very best friends, because we were born on the same day. We were both born on December 7th and it's unbelievable, that we hardly have any differences of opinion and cat fights, that are so very common among women friends. Same day birthday, though little uncommon, is wonderful, coz you get to enjoy two birthday celebrations and double yummy delights! Twins, who have same day birthdays, are often found to be diametrically opposites. I am lucky to share the same birthday with my dearest friend Suzanne. I feel that our friendship is eternal. We have two different birthday parties in our respective houses and we are showered with great birthday gifts from our common friends.

If you too are lucky to share same day birthday with your friend, brother, sister or anybody else, send a two-in-one birthday wish for sharing birthdays on the same day!

Bunka Shishu Embroidery

Bunka Shishu Embroidery

Bunka shishu in English often shortened to bunka, is a form of Japanese embroidery originating around the turn of the 20th Century. Bunka artists use a specialized embroidery needle and rayon threads to create very detailed pictures that some liken to oil paintings.

Typical subjects include people, living things, and traditional Japanese scenes.
Unlike some other forms of embroidery, bunka is fragile and is usually presented as artwork rather than as clothing adornment.

Bunka has gained in popularity since the advent of numbered kits, which provide a step-by-step guide to producing artwork.

Halloween Birthday Celebration Ideas Part 2

In my last post about Halloween birthday, I discussed about unique Halloween recipes that would surprise everyone invited to your party. Here are some more Halloween birthday party ideas:

1) For your Halloween birthday party, select a theme which you like. You can plan something like Harry Potter theme, especially if you have children coming to your party. Include Harry Potter games and quiz for the children and give the winners special Harry Potter prizes like Harry Potter coins, sweatshirts, goodie bags filled with Harry Potter magic tricks, candies, wizard hats etc. which would please the little monsters invited to your party!

2) If you plan to have a pumpkin carving party for your birthday, you can request everybody invited to bring their own pumpkin. Play some fun Halloween music to greet your guests. You can have a “build a scarecrow” competition in your party to add to the fun. Pack all the old and tattered clothes in a big laundry bag. Divide all the children into 3 or 4 groups and let them take some assistance from an elder. Give them instructions what the scarecrow should look like. The group who makes the best scarecrow will get a surprise gift. After that, you can start the pumpkin carving competition, so that everyone has their own Jack O' Lantern. The most perfect 3 pumpkin carvers will walk away with the prize.

3) Keep sufficient food in the dining area, so that your guests can snack in whenever they feel hungry. Chicken pizzas, veggies, chicken wings, pumpkin pies, pumpkin cakes, Halloween cookies, candies, desserts, hamburgers, mashed potato, sandwiches, sausages, etc, would be fantastic to make children and adults lick their fingers.

4) When it's time for dinner, shut off all the lights, and light candles, to create the maximum scary effect. Keep the glowing Jack O' Lanterns and play scary music in the background. Let everyone share their spooky stories, experiences and jokes amid the light and dark ambiance.

5) For Halloween costume birthday party, decorate the inside and outside of your house to give it a haunted look. Place spider webs (available at any Halloween store), tombstones made from plywoods, creepy scarecrows in your garden or front of the house to welcome the guests! Inside of the house can be decorated with spider webs, artificial skeletons, mummies (made from old clothes and rolls of gauze), Jack O' Lanterns, scary masks, and so on. Make bats (cut out from black paper) and hang them from the ceiling using clear thread. Keep candy bags for children as special gifts and mouthwatering Halloween recipes.

If someone close is having a birthday on this Halloween, wish them lots of luck with this spooky surprise!

Smyrna Stitch

Smyrna Stitch is a Another variation of the cross stitch, this beauty is sometimes
known as the double cross stitch.

It forms a good depiction of the eight Sabbats in the Wheel of the Year.

Bring needle from back to front at odd numbers and enter fabric at even numbers.

For larger stars, finish with a tiny stitch across the center to prevent snagging

Basque knot

Basque knot also known as Basque Loop stitch, and Knotted loop stitch. As a stitch it can be employed singly, or scattered over an area.

They can also be worked as a textured line, as they can be easily worked joined together. The line produced is well defined as it is knotted.

Basque knot is similar to Palestrina. The main difference, as you can see from the illustrations you work the stitch from right to left, along a line instead of left to right.

The stitch is worked in the same manner as Palestrina stitch only work the stitch from right to left, along a line instead of left to right. Also instead of moving diagonally behind the fabric you move vertically.
Basque knot

Interlaced Running Stitch

Interlaced running stitch is an attractive line of loops which follows curves well.

To work this stitch simply pass the needle over and under the fabric to create a line of running stitch. Lace or thread the stitches with a contrasting colour or weight thread.

This forms the first half of the loops. At the end of the row, turn and lace to form the other side of the loops.

Use a tapestry needle to avoid splitting the foundation running stitch. With this stitch, take care to lace, and not to pick up any of the fabric.

A thread of one color winds through a line of running stitches, then the other side intertwines with a thread of a complimentary hue. Because of the perfect symmetry, it represents the balances of love and hate, light and dark, the right and left hemispheres of the brain, magickal energies, and the polarities of male and female. The intertwining threads also symbolize the mingling of ideas and thought.Interlaced Running Stitch

Colonial knot

Colonial knot is called as figure eight knot, Colonial knot looks very much like a French knot.

To work Colonial knot stitch, bring your thread up through the fabric. I hold the thread in my left hand and with the thread loose place the needle to the right of the thread with the needle pointing away from you. Take the thread under the needle and then over the needle to form a figure 8. This can be done in a hooking action by turning anti-clockwise the needle 180 degrees.

Take the needle to the back of the fabric close to where it first came out. Before you pull it through make sure the loop is snug around the shaft of the needle

Candlewicking

Candlewicking is a form of surface embroidery that traditionally uses an unbleached cotton thread on a piece of unbleached muslin. It gets its name from the nature of the thread, which very much resembles the wick used in a candle. Motifs are created using a variety of knots and satin stiches. Subject matter is usually taken from nature, flowers, insects, etc. Other traditional motifs resemble PA Dutch or colonial designs. Modern designs include colored floss embroidery with the traditional white on white stitching.

Candlewicking has its origins in american history as new settlers sought to decorate their new homes with minimal supplies. The dust was easily washed from the fabric and able to endure significant wear.

Candlewicking is most commonly used as a cushion cover.
Candlewicking

Berwick stitch

Berwick stitch
Berwick stitch is also known as Looped edge stitch and forms a line of upright stitches each with a knotted base. This is a quick and easy version of buttonhole which is useful on needlework motifs that have curves.

This needlework stitch is worked from left to right sewing over two imaginary lines.

Bring the thread out on the lower line, insert the needle in position in the upper line making a straight downward motion and then wrap a loop of thread around the needle point. Pull the needle through the fabric to form a loop. Tighten the knot slightly before moving to the next stitch.

Berwick stitch is equally effective with the knotted edge on the inside or outside of the curve.

In the case of using berwick stitch as an decorative embellishment on crazy quilting a more decorative line can be created with the use of beads, and a detached chain, or French knots sewn at the top of each spine.

The length and spacing of the spines can create ornate patterns and effects. This build up of patterns using the texture of the ridge at the base of the spine is also very effective in forms of counted thread and drawn needlework

Coral stitch

Coral stitch is also known as coral knot, German knot stitch, knotted stitch, beaded stitch, and snail trail. It is also incorrectly known as scroll stitch.

Coral stitch is an old embroidery stitch which creates a line that looks like a row of knots and is used for outlines and follows a curved detail well. Coral stitch is frequently found in seventeenth and eighteenth century English crewel work. It is also a very useful stitch for twiggy bits in a floral design. It can also be used to create a knotted filling with the knots form a secondary pattern across the filling.

Coral stitch is worked from right to left. To work bring the thread up from the back of the fabric and hold it loosely on the surface of the fabric with your thumb. Insert the needle at a right angle, above the line to be worked and bring it out just below the line to be worked. Pull the needle through the fabric and over the thread to form a knot.

Coral stitch can be varied by altering the angle of the needle as it passes through the fabric, and by altering the spacing of the knots along the row. The effect created is also altered by the weight and twist of the thread used. Coral stitch

Filling Stitches

Filling Stitches

Hand embroidery often involves covering small and larger areas with thread. There are several basic stitches commonly used to accomplish this. The most common filling stitches in general embroidery are probably satin stitch and long and short stitch. However, it's nice to have a few alternatives when filling up embroidered spaces. Here are some of the more common basic filling stitches.

Fishbone Stitch:

Fishbone Stitch Here's a good stitch to start with, when it comes to filling smaller shapes such as leaves and flower petals. The advantage of fishbone stitch is that it really looks like a leaf when complet, and you don't have to do anything "extra" to add, for example, the spine down the middle of the leaf. If you want a perfectly smooth leaf, though, you would use satin stitch instead of fishbone. The trick to a good fishbone stitched leaf is to draw a line in the middle of the leaf shape to use as a guide. You want to keep your edges smooth, too.

Direction:

Begin at the tip of the shape, coming up at A. Make a longish straight stitch straight down, following the center line marked in the leaf. Come up at B, and then slant your stitch to cross over the base of the straight stitch, just to the other side of your center line. Come up at C, and go down just on the other side of the center line, crossing over the tip of the previous stitch you just made. Note that the stitches take turns crossing over each other at the center line. They do not enter the fabric "on the line" - rather, just to the other side of the line. In this manner, the stitches overlap each other, all the way down the shape, giving the shape that "woven" look, creating the "spine" down the middle. Keep your stitches close together - you want to cover the area solidly.

flat stich:

flat stichThis is a lot like the fishbone stitch, but instead of stitching over one center line, you draw two lines just off the center, and take your needle down on either one of them. The flat stitch is also known as the Croatian stitch or the Croatian flat stitch. Again, it solidly fills a shape, forming an overlap in your stitches so that a kind of spine runs down th emiddle of the shape. Once executed, it looks almost identical to the fishbone, except it doesn't come to a point. Flat stitch is a good way to fill in circular flower petals.

Direction:

Again, with this stitch, you're going to be working slightly slanted stitches. Come up at A, go down at B, up at C, cross over the stitch you made when you went down at B, and go down at D. Keep your stitches close together, creating a solid filling. Make certain your edges are kept smooth by following the outline carefully, and taking up very little fabric between stitches
